I Survived IRMA

Image
9-13-17 I am so fortunate and blessed to be alive. Hurricane Irma went through St. Augustine, late Sunday night (10th) and on into early Monday morning with a fury. This is my first experience hunkering down through a hurricane and I want to share what happened. It was a typical Sunday night, with curtains pulled back, slight breeze, giving me my feel-good view of the back yard and the pond just a few yards away. I went to bed at my normal time, about 9pm but in the back of my mind I knew SHE was coming. I've been watching the weather channel most of the day just trying to stay informed. I watched what SHE did to the Florida Keys and I was thinking surely it will run out of steam by the time it gets up to northern Florida. So, I hit the sack thinking that I would probably wake up in the early morning to some loud wind and go back to sleep. It's difficult to describe what woke me up around 2am, just as the weatherman predicted. I'm from Kansas originally so I know how to g

AMAZING PODCAST - CHECK IT OUT

In my quest to figure out just what it is that I'm supposed to do when I grow up, I found this Amazing Podcast called the Experience 50 Podcast by Mary Keyes Rogers. Click here to check out her website, pick a podcast and take a listen. You will be hooked. Mary talks about the transitions and pivots we baby boomers and mid-lifers are bound to go through. She interviews some really interesting folks on a variety of subjects and does it in such a way that I feel like I'm sitting right there at the table with them drinking coffee. Some of her episodes are serious subjects that might make you shed a tear and some will have you rolling on the floor (or on the sidewalk). I like to listen while I'm on my walkabouts in the morning. One morning, I was walking on my regular neighborhood path and listening to a hilarious interview, I think it was about travel. Something the guest said "tickled" me and I started laughing out loud. The kids at the bus stop that I was pass
A lot of us Baby Boomers want more than to simply coast into retirement. However, a lot of us can't afford to retire for numerous reasons. According to the Insured Retirement Institute website, 45% of us have zero savings. That means there will be a lot more of us working for a lot longer than we may really want to be. For me, I want to keep busy and be productive and I'm just not ready to sit and watch the world go by. Thank God, I have my health and I can be productive. So, how do we Boomers handle this workplace and working for so many years. I've been doing what I do for 38 years and I still enjoy it but it tends to lose its spark some days. But I'm not financially ready to retire so I must continue working and bringing in a paycheck. I am not alone. MY STORY - THE SHORT VERSION I recently accepted an offer from one company ready to go to work on a Monday. The HR department approved me, made me an offer that I accepted, and I had a signed contract ready to go. T
SURPRISED? According to insights by Nielsen Marketing, in less that five years, 50 % of the US population will be over the age of 50. They'll not only control 70 percent of the nation's disposable income, but they also stand to inherit $15 TRILLION in the next 20 years. And as Boomers become increasingly social media-savvy, they'll be able to put their money towards whatever is trending. As a result, they may become the key to the success for many brands.
The "Baby Boomer" generation is considered to be those born between 1946 and 1964. I believe our generation can be summarized in this way: We grew up during a time of idealism with television and a car for every suburban home. Our generation also grew up feeling liberated; however, disillusionment set in with major events such as the assassination of JFK, the Vietnam War, Watergate and an increase in divorce rates. Our core values are: Anything is possible, Equal opportunity for all, Question Authority, and Personal Gratification is important. Within our work we endeavored to climb the corporate ladder and family time became not the first thing on the list. Our financial approach became, buy now and pay later as credit card debt began to increase.
